The seeds for The Beverly Centre’s
long history were planted in 1956 when Norman Martin and
his older brother Edward opened a 15-bed nursing home across
from Calgary’s Holy Cross Hospital to serve convalescing
seniors. Their valuable service to the seniors’ community
was quickly recognized by the Provincial Government who
subsequently involved the brothers in the development of
the first Nursing Home Act to govern and monitor nursing
home care across the province.
In 1959, their mission continued with the
development of a 34-bed nursing home in the Bankview area
of Calgary. By 1971, the City of Calgary had grown considerably
creating a demand for additional beds in the province. Norman
Martin began construction of the innovative 144-bed Beverly
Nursing Home on the current Glenmore site that featured
multiple interior garden courtyards, a bungalow style and
two-bed rooms that far exceeded industry standards at that
time.
In 1978, Norman’s son David joined
his father in managing The Beverly Nursing Home and brought
the vision of a new generation of long term care to the
organization. In 1982, together they supervised the addition
of 38 new beds to the Glenmore facility.
David spearheaded a new era in nursing
home design and delivery of care in 1992 with a major renovation
and expansion of The Beverly Nursing Home. Re-opened as
The Beverly Centre in 1993, the new facility featured fully
carpeted hallways, residential-style furnishings, more private
rooms, smaller dining rooms and elegant gathering spaces
that created an intimate, home-like environment for our
residents. That same year, the facility was recognized for
excellence by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation
(CCHSA) and awarded a Four Year Accreditation With Distinction,
the first health care institution in Western Canada and
only the second long term care centre in Canada ever to
receive this award.
In 2000-01, eager to realize his vision
of “living in place” for the evolving needs
of Calgary’s seniors, David developed a senior care
and residential campus within the city’s growing southeast
community that included a long term care centre and an assisted-living
residence on a single, seven-acre site. These contiguous
properties feature The Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore with
150 private rooms for long term care and The Beverly Estate
with 50 studio, one- and two-bedroom suites for a more independent
lifestyle.
On September 1st, 2004, AgeCare purchased
The Beverly Centre Glenmore, The Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore
and The Beverly Estate as both the Martin family properties
and the AgeCare families of operators were so incredibly
similar in their service philosophies. As a result, AgeCare
can expand upon its continuous improvement programs as it
becomes one of Western Canada's fastest growing providers
of innovative senior care communities.
