Care Funding & Accommodation Fees

There is often a lot of confusion about the services that residents pay for and those paid for by the provincial government.

  • Health care related services, Care Funding, are paid by Alberta Health Services, through funds provided by the Government of Alberta. This is commonly referred to as .
  • Residents pay an Accommodation Fee to cover the costs of providing accommodations and services like meals, housekeeping and building maintenance.

Care Funding

Alberta Health Services, through funds provided by the Government of Alberta, is responsible for funding health care.

Care funding provides for:

Nursing Services
  • Registered Nurses (RNs)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
  • Health Care Aides (HCAs)
Therapy Services
  • Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, and other therapy services as required
  • Recreation Therapy
Other Care Services
  • Social Work Support
  • Registered Dietitian
  • Pharmacy Services Including Medications

Who Qualifies for Publicly Funded  Care in Alberta?

To qualify for publicly funded care  you must have residency status in the Province of Alberta which requires:

  • 10 consecutive years of residency in Canada at the time of application for care centre admission, or
  • 3 consecutive years residency in Alberta any time during your lifetime, or
  • 3 consecutive months residing in the Calgary Health Region prior to application

Accommodation Fees

All accommodation fees for a continuing care are set by Government of Alberta. Accommodation fees are based on the room type.

As of July 1, 2017 the accommodation fees are:
  • Private room, $65.50 per day, average monthly of $1,992
  • Semi-Private room, $56.65 per day, average monthly of $1,723

Rates will increase on the 1st of July each year and pricing is set by the Government of Alberta.

Financial assistance for eligible residents is available through Alberta Seniors.

Resident accommodation fees pay for services such as:

  • Resident room
  • Food Services
  • Maintenance
  • Utilities (natural gas, electricity, water)
  • Building insurance
  • Administrative services
