We Begin our Journey ~ Aging in Place arrives in Alberta
In 1998, Dr. Hasmukh Patel and Dr. Kabir Jivraj founded AgeCare Ltd. with a corporate mission of developing and managing innovative Supportive Housing and Long Term Care Communities in Alberta. Their vision and passion was to introduce the “aging in place” concept. Through their first successful RFP, what was then called The Palliser Health Region, the journey to becoming the AgeCare Family of Communities began.
AgeCare created Valleyview Assisted Living and Long Term Care Community in Medicine Hat. This model was so well received and welcomed, that 10 years later, Valleyview remains a vibrant and respected choice for quality and care for local seniors. The shared vision by Dr. Patel and Dr. Jivraj for quality in care and services has meant that subsequent communities have experienced the same level of success.
One year later, Orchard Manor followed in Brooks, Alberta with 53 rooms and within the 3 years Columbia Assisted Living, 112 room community in Lethbridge, Alberta was created using a similar model.
Columbia today still boast one of the most unique designs to support seniors, created with 4 clusters of 5-8 rooms facing into a common lounge area on each floor. Together the core of the building is a soaring atrium area that provides such a bright and welcoming atmosphere for the residents. This design means no long hallways to amenities and residents never feel they might not be able to find the staff or supports they need.
AgeCare acquires Communities in British Columbia and Alberta
AgeCare began to grow through acquisition and purchased Canada Way Care Centre and Lodge in 2003, located in Burnaby, B.C. AgeCare facilitated the transformation of that community with its renaming to Harmony CourtCare Centre and Harmony Court Estate - a community of 216 rooms. Harmony Court was renovated and re-launched as the local favourite for high quality housing at a price point modest income seniors can manage.
Today, Harmony Court Care Centre has successfully partnered with Fraser Health to pilot and successfully roll out the Alternative Model of Care – Rosewood Neighbourhood. The only assisted living level, secured Dementia Housing option for seniors through Fraser Health.
On September 1st, 2004, AgeCare concluded its second acquisition process in purchasing two prominent senior care communities in Calgary: The Beverly Centre Glenmore which has 214 Long Term Care beds, The Beverly Centre LakeMidnapore with 270 Long Term Care beds and which includes The Beverly Estate with 50 Private Assisted Living suites.
New Communities Join the AgeCare Family
This level of high quality and superior seniors living has been repeated in the design and construction of Sunrise Gardens, which opened August, 2009 in Brooks, Alberta.
Sunrise Gardens is comprised of 84 Supportive Living units and the moment you enter this community, you can see this is a sister community to our Beverly Centre Glenmore and Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore sites, with its superior design and features.
Sunrise Gardens was opened using a new model of care and services through a partnership Alberta Health Services. The successful launch of the newest model Supportive Living Model (4) and Supportive Living Dementia (4) began at Sunrise Gardens, the first in Alberta.
Additionally, through the Accreditation Canada process, AgeCare and Sunrise Gardens were recently recognized as having industry-leading practices, a rare citation. AgeCare and our dedicated staff have been cited for their ability to work in partnership with our community and regional health care partners to provide the seamless delivery of care and services.
