Our vision for AgeCare Sagewood was to create a vibrant community that celebrated and supported aging with dignity, independence and community interaction for seniors. With the growing population of seniors in Strathmore and the surrounding communities, the need for affordable seniors housing and care services had been recognized for several years. The concept was to offer housing and care service options in the same location.
The community features secured supportive living units that can accommodate seniors with moderate to severe dementia, supportive living units, and long-term care beds in a caring, warm, inclusive, and supportive environment. Inter-generational programming is also incorporated in phase through the child day care and the adult day support program.
AgeCare Sagewood was one of the first in Alberta to pursue LEED silver certification. The design team explored sustainable options in the creating an energy-efficient building. Sustainable design features include high-efficiency boilers, fresh air ducted directly into the suites with continuous bathroom exhaust routed back to the HRV units, water use reduction and reduced construction waste.
Attention has been paid to the design of all aspects of the community including wide hallways, handrails, barrier free suites, wheelchair accessible showers in each suite, and emergency call system. In the new wing (phase 2) of the community, the wings on each floor extend from a central space that has a dining room with a server, a TV lounge, a quiet lounge and outside balcony. At the end of the wing, there is a quiet lounge with a large exterior window allowing for plenty of natural light. Each floor has a spa room for residents who prefer (or require) a nice soak in a specialized spa tub, designed for this resident population.
