Calgary, AB – AgeCare announced today that it has received Accreditation with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada, the highest award bestowed by that organization.
Accreditation is designed to assess a health care provider’s compliance with quality standards including client centred care, safety, work life, continuity of services, effectiveness, efficiency, and accessibility.
“I congratulate all our staff who contributed to this outstanding achievement. Receiving exemplary standing not only gives us pride but also provides confidence to our residents, their families, and our valued partners that we are committed to providing high quality care,” said Dr. Hasmukh Patel, Chief Executive Officer at AgeCare. “In our relentless pursuit of quality, this accreditation is a clear indicator that everyone at AgeCare is working hard to ensure a standard of excellence throughout the organization.”
Surveyors from Accreditation Canada visited 10 AgeCare facilities in September 2013, including private retirement residences, publicly funded continuing care centers, and the support office. They surveyed for five sets of standards including customized medication management, infection prevention and control, leadership, long term care services, and residential homes for seniors.
“The team of three peer health care surveyors had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of our employees, residents, family members, volunteers and partners during the accreditation process”, said Robin Harron, Director of Health Services at AgeCare. “The result is a clear picture of how effective our Total Quality Management Framework is in identifying areas for improvement and sustaining change.‟
“Accreditation Canada would like to commend AgeCare for its commitment to ongoing quality improvement,” said Wendy Nicklin, President and CEO of Accreditation Canada. “This award recognizes the efforts of the entire staff to provide safe, quality health services to its patients.”
Accreditation Canada’s initial report highlighted two key areas for improvement as it relates to managing and administering medications. Recommendations included ensuring the use of two client identifiers and performing independent double checks before administering high alert medications. On March 7, 2014 AgeCare was informed that they have met all of the follow-up requirements resulting in the Accreditation Decision Committee awarding AgeCare accreditation with exemplary standing.
“Relentless pursuit of excellence is part of our daily work, as this is the way we can ensure the best possible care and services for our residents and their families”, said Dr. Kabir Jivraj, Managing Director at AgeCare. “Our commitment to all our stakeholders is to provide the best quality of life experience for each resident. We continue to strive to provide the highest standards of care by not only implementing all of Accreditation Canada’s recommendations but continually striving to exceed all standards set by them.”
