AgeCare Walden Heights COVID-19 Weekly Update for June 19, 2020

Dear Resident or Family Member,

We remain committed to providing updates to our residents, families, and staff at AgeCare Walden Heights. We will be providing weekly updates to keep you all informed on what is happening at our community and organization-wide.

These weekly updates will include:

  1. Information and announcements – this week we are providing tips on how to stay safe when going out for medical or other essential appointments.
  2. Recreation highlights as the need to stay active, intellectually stimulated, and socially connected never ends.
  3. A weekly shout-out to celebrate the great work and activities happening at our community.

Staying Safe: Medical & Other Essential Appointments

As Alberta moves into the next phase of reopening, it is still the recommendation of the  Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) that residents stay on-site. The CMOH is asking that wherever possible, appointments with health professionals are done virtually or on-site. To learn more about these options, please consult with your care team.

To help protect residents who must leave the community for medical or other essential appointments, we want to share some important tips.

Please note that appointments outside the community cannot occur while a site is in an outbreak or the resident is in isolation.

Physical Distancing

Practice physical distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the risk of getting sick. Physical distancing involves:

  1. Taking steps to limit the number of people you come into close contact with.
  2. Arrangements should be made by the resident (or alternate decision maker) with the practitioner’s office to book an appointment time where the resident’s potential contact with others is reduced.
  3. Stay at least 2 meters (the length of a hockey stick) distance from other people.
  4. Avoid overcrowding in elevators, public restrooms or other enclosed spaces.

Hand Hygiene & Cover Your Cough

  1. Bring hand sanitizer with you on this appointment to ensure you have this on-hand, when you need it.
  2. Wash or sanitize your hands often, including after touching communal surfaces, and after leaving an appointment, or business.
  3. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.

Wear a Mask

  1. AgeCare will provide a mask for residents who must leave the community for medical or other essential appointments.
  2. Wash or sanitize your hands before putting your mask on.
  3. To put on your mask properly:
    1. First secure ties or elastics around your head or ears
    2. If the mask has a nose bar, pinch around your nose
    3. Pull mask under your chin, so both mouth and nose are covered.
  4. Avoid touching the mask or your face under the mask.
  5. If the mask becomes damp, wash or sanitize your hands and replace the mask.
  6. Remove the mask when eating or drinking.
  7. Never reuse paper masks. If using a cloth mask, wash after each use.
  8. To remove your mask properly:
    1. Wash or sanitize hands.
    2. Do not touch the front of the mask. Remove using the ties or elastic loops.
    3. Discard immediately in a garbage can.
  9. Wash or sanitize hands, again.

Wearing Gloves

Gloves are not necessary to wear in public, but if you choose to wear them:

  1. Wash or sanitize your hands before you put them on and immediately after taking them off.
  2. Change gloves if:
    1. You touch your face – eyes, nose or mouth.
    2. You cover a cough or sneeze with your hands while wearing gloves.
    3. They become dirty or torn.
  3. Discard gloves in a lined garbage bin after taking them off.
  4. To avoid spreading germs or COVID-19 when wearing gloves:
    1. Do not touch your face or mask with your gloves.
    2. Do not touch any personal items (cell phone, bag, credit card) that you might touch again with bare hands.
    3. Do not try to wash gloves or use hand sanitizer with gloves on.

Driving to Your Appointment

If you are driving to your appointment:

  1. Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces such as door handles, seatbelt buckles, and armrests before and after each trip.
  2. Limit the number of people in the vehicle where possible, to maintain 2 metres physical distancing.
  3. Ensure everyone is wearing a mask.
  4. Ensure everyone washes or sanitizes hands before entering the vehicle.

Using Public Transit

We strongly recommend that residents do not take public transit. It is nearly impossible to maintain 2-meter physical distancing and you cannot be certain that the area has been disinfected recently. Where ever possible, please coordinate transportation by car. If you must use public transport:

  1. Wear a face mask at all times.
  2. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.
  3. Sanitize hands after contact with high touch surfaces such as buttons, railings, armrests, doors, and handles.
  4.  Avoid touching your face at all times, especially after contact with high touch surfaces such as buttons, railings, armrests, doors, and handles.
  1. Put as much distance as possible between yourself and other riders; to maintain 2 meters physical distancing.
  2. Sanitize hands immediately upon exiting.

Returning to the Community

When you / your loved one returns to the community:

  1. Properly dispose of masks (and gloves if you used them).
  2. Wash or sanitize hands.
  3. Be screened for symptoms and have your temperature taken at the screening station.

Recreation Highlights

The need to stay active, intellectually stimulated, and socially connected never ends – even during these unprecedented times. Our recreation team is working hard to create engaging activities to enrich the mind, body and spirit, while ensuring residents can maintain appropriate physical distancing.

Weekly Shout-Out

This week we are celebrating our fantastic Walden Heights Reception Team. They keep our site safe by screening each and every person entering our building, from staff to vendors to maintenance personnel. They cheerfully greet our teams each morning and remain vigilant in answering telephone and in-person callers, triaging requests and ensuring all deliveries get to loved ones in a timely manner – all with a big smile! We are so thankful to Sharon, Manisha, Beth, Jennifer, Avigail, Kayla, Jane, and all of the Business Office personnel who cover the desk from time to time!
