Sagewood February 2018 Newsletter & Calendars

February is not only Valentine’s Day, Family day and Heart and Stroke month but for those who do not know, it is also Recreation Therapy Awareness Month.

The best way to describe recreation is to think about the activities one loves and chooses to do! Enjoying various recreation activities engages people of all ages cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally.  When people are participating in these activities, they have an increased sense of well-being, in turn creating emotional connections that trigger chemical reactions in the brain. These chemicals include endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, more commonly known as happiness chemicals and are naturally produced in the body triggered when people are active and happy.

What is Recreation Therapy? Recreation therapy is creating positive changes using leisure activities as their tool! Recreation therapy is the creation of positive and engaging activities based on individual’s interest that targets their cognitive abilities, physical abilities, and social abilities. This creates emotional connections that ideally, improve or maintain skills within each of these elements.  Many of the recreation specialists’ work with people with progressive and degenerative conditions, recreation therapy can be instrumental in improving, or merely maintaining abilities that offset the symptoms derived from their diagnoses.

2018 Chinese New Year : YEAR OF THE DOG

The Dog is the eleventh of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Monkey, Rooster and Dog were in another country, helping a god defeat evil spirits. After, they set off to the party together. Because they arrived at the same time, the Jade Emperor went by the order they met the god in the other country. Thus, Dog became eleventh.
