Dear Residents and Family Members,
November is here! I often wonder where did October go. This past month, the SkyPointe community had their first Fall Market, and despite our first blast of winter weather, it was a wonderful success! In October, residents were able to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday and participate in a good Old Fashion Tail Gate Party celebrating the Calgary Stampeders with snacks and musical entertainment.
The fun does not stop in October for SkyPointe. November will be busy with different activities, programs and facility events. We will be honouring our Veterans and those who have bravely fought for our country with a Remembrance Day Ceremony in the Atrium. All residents and staff are encouraged to participate. There will be musical entertainment spread out throughout the month, and a Bowling League has been established with our residents. Each Thursday, two neighbourhoods will square off in the Atrium.
The SkyPointe Community is happy to announce our Whitehorn Neighbourhood (4th Floor), will be opening on November 26, 2018. With the partnership with Alberta Health services, Whitehorn will be a new Long-Term Care floor with a Mental Health Specialty Program focusing on residents aged 18 and older. We are fortunate to have available leaders who can bring their expertise and are honoured to have the opportunity to provide the best quality of life experience to our new residents.
With the winter holiday’s fast approaching, the Recreation Department has dedicated the end of the month to decorating the facility. Our residents help decorate and set up for the season, or at least reminisce and enjoy some hot coco. Resident and Family Council will now occur separately for long term care and supported living, respectively. Meeting dates will be posted to each neighbourhood and on the program calendars. The Recreation department will be running a holiday fundraiser with Purdy’s Chocolates. Just in time for your holiday shopping!
Please, take a look at our online November newsletter and program calendars for upcoming programs and events. If you have any questions or concerns, please, contact me! Or stop by the recreation office. Our general office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors. Every year one in three seniors will fall. The older we get, the greater the risk of falling becomes. Our bodies naturally change with age, and these changes affect the way we feel, move, and behave.
A fall can have a devastating and lasting impact on an individual resulting in injury, chronic pain and a reduced quality of life. Even without an injury, a fall can cause a loss in confidence and a reduction in activities for older adults.
The good news is that there are actions you can take to prevent falls. Talk to your nurse or Case Manager to discuss things you can do to reduce your risk of falls.
