Salimah Walji-Shivji is not one to sit by and wait for things to happen. Instead, she makes them happen while infusing the teams she leads with infectious energy and passion that empowers them to think big, set stretch goals, and then pursue those goals. As our Chief Operation Officer and General Counsel at AgeCare, she inspires us with a focus that anything is achievable.
Before joining us at AgeCare, Salimah started her career in 2003 at the Calgary Health Region (now Alberta Health Services). Her roles included Articling Student, Legal Counsel, Associate General Counsel and General Counsel.
Salimah Walji-Shivji, as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at AgeCare, has oversight for Care Services, Support Services, Communications, Corporate & Legal. Salimah also enjoys her role as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary, where she teaches a course she wrote: Social Work & The Law.
Salimah holds a Bachelor of Social Work and a Masters in Clinical Social Work, both from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba. In 2022 she received her ICD.D. designation through the Institute of Corporate Directors. In 2022 Salimah was granted her Queen’s Counsel designation.
Salimah has received numerous accolades, including Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 Award, the Women in Law Leadership Award, and the Canadian Corporate Counsel Community Builder Award. In September 2020, Salimah was appointed to the Mount Royal University Board of Governors. She is the Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association National Health Law Section, and in April 2022, and was elected as Bencher in 2021.
When Salimah is not wearing her AgeCare hat, she can be found volunteering in the Ismaili Muslim (Aga Khan) community. Over the years, she has devoted numerous hours to charities she is passionate about, holding seats with the FOCUS Canada Humanitarian Assistance Board, the South Calgary Primary Care Network, the United Way, and the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter.
