This week marks National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the many people who give their time, energy, and heart to others in meaningful ways.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, led by Volunteer Canada, we reflect on this year’s theme “Ignite Volunteerism: A Year-Long, Nation-Building Celebration.” Your contributions truly bring this theme to life and help ignite a spirit of volunteerism across our communities.
With over 700 AgeCare volunteers across Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario, the collective impact of our volunteers helps strengthen connections and build a sense of belonging. Whether it’s sharing a story, a laugh, or simply being present, your support through companionship and meaningful activities makes a lasting difference in the lives of our residents, their families and our teams.
At AgeCare, we appreciate how Volunteers Light Up the Room, and this is evident in the warmth, joy and connection you bring each day. During National Volunteer Week, we’re honoured to shine a spotlight on some of AgeCare’s very special volunteers.

At Regina Gardens Long-Term Care Residence (Hamilton, ON), Anne is one of them. As both a resident and a volunteer, Anne brings a steady presence to daily life in the home. Each morning, she shares announcements, music and moments of connection that help everyone feel included and engaged. Her contributions reach far beyond the microphone. From organizing 50/50 draws and supporting residents in memory care to hosting evening movies and serving as Residents’ Council President, Anne continuously creates opportunities for connection across the community.

At AgeCare Royal City (New Westminster, BC), Barb and Jan are a familiar and welcome presence. They each bring their own strengths to volunteering, often coming together for celebrations, events and moments that bring the community closer.
Barb supports residents through weekly activities like shuffleboard and karaoke, and spends time one-to-one with those transitioning into the home, offering conversation and connection. Jan contributes through bingo, music programs and special events, encouraging residents to take part and finding joy in the moments that spark engagement.
Together, Barb and Jan create space for connection in ways that feel natural and meaningful. Their presence reflects the power of volunteering in long-term care, not only for residents and families, but for those who give their time so generously.

At AgeCare South Terrace (Edmonton, AB), Taylor’s visits are always met with excitement and anticipation. Alongside her therapy dogs, Heidi and Atlas, she brings moments of companionship and connection that residents look forward to each week.
Through her work with therapy animals, Taylor creates opportunities for residents to reminisce, engage, and simply enjoy being present. Whether it’s sitting together in the sunshine or sharing stories, these visits offer comfort in ways that feel both gentle and meaningful. Her presence reflects the unique impact of volunteering. Showing up, building relationships, and creating space for moments that stay with people long after the visit ends.
We’re very grateful to Anne, Barb, Jan and Taylor – and to all the many volunteers across AgeCare who make a difference every day. Thank you for the light you bring to AgeCare every day!
