AgeCare Shawnee: New continuing care community coming to Calgary

14 November 2024

On November 13th, 2024, AgeCare proudly unveiled a new continuing care community, AgeCare Shawnee, a community that will be home to 314 long-term care residents in southwest Calgary.

Joining AgeCare CEO Salimah Walji-Shivji for the sod-turning event were the Hon. Jason Nixon, Alberta Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, Eric Bouchard, MLA Calgary-Lougheed, Dan McLean, Ward 13 Councillor, City of Calgary and Dr. Kabir Jivraj, AgeCare Managing Director.

This new continuing care home, being built in partnership with Hestia Construction, will feature state-of-the-art facilities designed to offer a safe, comfortable home for people in need of long-term care. Seniors and their families will benefit from supportive and engaging environments, including recreational and multi-purpose activity spaces, an outdoor courtyard, a children’s daycare and adult day programs.

“AgeCare Shawnee represents our company’s philosophy of providing the best quality-of-life experience for residents through innovative and purpose-built infrastructure,” said Salimah Walji-Shivji, AgeCare CEO. “We are grateful for our long-standing relationships with the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health Services and their ongoing support through the development of this significant project, which will greatly increase access to continuing care for the residents of southwest Calgary.”

“Continuing care homes play such an important role in providing safe, dignified care for our seniors. It is exciting to see AgeCare, a valued partner, hard at work building homes that offer a wide range of supports for seniors in Alberta,” said Hon. Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “I am delighted to be here to mark the start of this latest AgeCare facility, which will be home to 314 long-term care residents in southwest Calgary.”

“AHS is pleased to support AgeCare and this new development, which will enhance the experience of continuing care residents and their families in the Calgary area,” said Shawna Syverson, Chief Zone Officer, Alberta Health Services. “Partnerships are fundamental to our ability to deliver the best possible care to the people in this community and throughout the province.”

Construction of AgeCare Shawnee is well underway at 50 Shawnee Street, SW in Calgary, AB. It is expected to open in Spring 2026.
