The holiday season is a time to reflect on cherished memories. It might bring to mind a festive tree decorated with ornaments, hot cocoa by the fire, a delicious meal surrounded by loved ones, or the cozy flickers of candlelight. While the season may mean something different to each of our residents, art is a powerful way to share their holiday spirit.
Within our AgeCare communities, we have a blend of emerging and accomplished artists. To celebrate their creativity and showcase their diverse vision of the holidays, we held our first ever AgeCare Holiday Card Contest.
This contest was an opportunity for our resident artists to share their holiday joy and traditions using an artistic medium of their choice. We received close to 100 beautiful and diverse submissions from our communities across Canada, and, after much deliberation, our three regional judging panels each chose a winner – one from Alberta, one from BC and one from Ontario. The winning designs are featured on our AgeCare holiday cards this year!
Linda F., a resident of AgeCare Brandt’s Creek Mews in Kelowna, was chosen as our winner from BC. Originally from California, Linda and her family moved to British Columbia when she was a young girl. Linda visited the Picasso exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery and became intrigued with his line drawing style, which inspired her to begin drawing. Art is a hobby she has enjoyed throughout her life, and she continues to find inspiration as a resident of AgeCare Brandt’s Creek Mews.
Our winner from Alberta is Alex B. from Calgary. In his earlier years, Alex was a woodshop teacher who enjoyed fishing in his spare time. These days, Alex likes to attend recreation programs in his home at AgeCare Glenmore, specifically enjoying opportunities to dance and paint. He also likes having coffee while chatting with his fellow residents. Alex’s art features holly trees, which remind him of his mother who used holly for her holiday decorations.
Albert C. from North York was chosen as our winning artist for the Ontario region. In his earlier years as a farmer and a banker, Albert enjoyed painting in his spare time. Now living at Gibson Long-Term Care Residence, Albert continues to enjoy expressing himself through art. He loves to use a variety of colours to create vibrant paintings like his winning submission. The inspiration for Albert’s painting came from childhood memories of building snowmen with his family during the holidays.
Congratulations to all three of our winners and thank you for making our holiday cards extra special this year! There are so many talented artists among our residents – we’re grateful to all who submitted their artwork and helped us get into the holiday spirit.
